Forty-two students join Mortar Board chapter at Washburn University

Forty-two students were inducted as members of the Ichabod Chapter of the National Senior Honor Society of Mortar Board at Washburn University. Also inducted as honorary member was Steve Cann, professor, political science.

Mortar Board Inc. is a national honor society which recognizes college seniors for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Founded in 1918 as the first national organization honoring senior college women, the Society opened its membership to men in 1975. Since 1918, more than 240,000 college students have been initiated into Mortar Board.

The 2009-10 Ichabod Chapter officers are: Angel Romero, president; Kaitlin Marsh, vice president; Josh Maples, secretary; Kate Rowden, treasurer; Morgan Schaeffer, director, communications; Emily Charles, historian; David Reed, director, membership; Courtney Peterson, director, alumni; and Heather Hartley, webmaster.

Initiates of the new chapter and their hometowns, classifications and major are:

  • Atchison: Jessica Schrick, senior, accounting and finance
  • Berryton: Sarah Sims, senior, marketing, finance and Spanish
  • Frankfort: Keri Hawkinson, junior, nursing
  • Garden City: Amanda Scully, senior, law enforcement
  • Great Bend: Shanna Carlson, senior, sociology and theatre; Trang LeNguyen, junior, general business, management and marketing
  • Hiawatha: Emily Charles, junior, music performance (voice) and mass media (media writing and publishing); Kailey Patton, senior, psychology
  • Kinsley: Mikale Burcher, junior, mass media and English
  • Lawrence: Kate Rowden, junior, nursing
  • Leavenworth: Rachel Darrow, senior, exercise physiology
  • Lebanon: Kelsey Thomsen, senior, biology
  • Lenexa: Danielle Hunter, senior, law enforcement and human services (victim and survivor services)
