Accreditation by Commission on Cancer as Comprehensive Cancer Program Stormont-Vail HealthCare and the Cotton-O'Neil Cancer Center in Topeka have achieved two major recognitions:

  • Recognition by the American Cancer Society with its Society Award. The Society Award is presented to corporations, foundations and individuals who have demonstrated exemplary generosity toward and support of the American Cancer Society and its mission to eliminate cancer and diminish suffering from this disease.
  • A three-year approval with commendation as a Comprehensive Cancer Program by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

The American Cancer Society award recognizes Stormont-Vail's dedication to the fight against cancer by helping to provide vital programs and services in the community. Capitol Federal Savings is the only other organization in the Topeka area to have received this American Cancer Society award.

"The American Cancer Society is proud to give The Society Award to those who are truly making a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their loved ones, which Stormont-Vail and Cotton-O'Neil Cancer Center do every day," says Stephanie Weiter, Society Regional Vice President in Kansas. "Engraved on the award are the words, ‘Generous people leading the way.' That sentiment truly describes Stormont-Vail's commitment to those suffering with this disease in our area."

The Accreditation by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancers. The Cotton-O'Neil Cancer Center received Commendation in seven of its nine standards. The Commission on Cancer has standards to ensure quality, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive cancer care delivery in health care settings.

The Cotton-O'Neil Cancer Center, 1414 S.W. 8th, Topeka, opened in December 2005 and consolidated the outpatient cancer care services of Stormont-Vail and Cotton-O'Neil Clinic. The center offers the latest technology for cancer care, including a Trilogy Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) system, and a PET/CT, as well as an infusion center, genetic counseling service and a wide variety of support services for patients and families.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and patient services.
